Ba Da Boom Percussion

Ba Da Boom percussion are the resident percussion ensemble at Queensland Conservatorium. Formed in 2003 by Vanessa Tomlinson, it has become an important laboratory for percussion in Australia. Ba Da Boom focuses equally on improvisation, new works and pre-existing repertoire, performing new music by composers such as Liza Lim, Erik Griswold, Jennifer Fowler, Gerardo Dirie, Michael Askill and Gerard Brophy.

They presented the Australian premiere of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians in 2003, River Styx  as part of William Duckworth's I-Orpheus (2008), Dada Drumming as part of the Queensland Music Festival (2004), Ba Da Boom plays Xenakis (2012) and performed with Kroumata in The Cage in US Festival (2012). They regularly perform classics such as Varese Ionisation, Antheil Ballet Mechanique, and Reich Drumming.

Recent guest artists include percussionists Fritz Hauser, Jan Williams, Kroumata, composer Martin Bresnick, pianist Lisa Moore and clarinetist Richard Haynes.

Ba Da Boom has a close working relationship with American/Australian composer Erik Griswold and presented the premiere of his Concerto for Prepared Piano and Percussion in 2007. Ba Da Boom also have a commissioning project and in 2012 have commissioned a new work from Chris Healy for solo timpani, and are part of a commissioning consortium for a work by Stanford University composer Mark Appelbaum, and Phil Treloar for solo prepared timpani.

In 2010 Ba Da Boom hosted the Australian Percussion Gathering which featured guest artists Kuniko Kato, Steven Schick, Phil Treloar and Sylvio Gualdo. Also included in this event was the epic 1000 Gongs, co-hosted by Clocked Out, The Environmental Music Day and more than 20 concerts of percussion music.

Ba Da Boom devised and produced the four-hour event Meditation Drumming with drummer David Jones, and the three-day Reflective Resonances in conjunction with the Buddha Birth Day Festival. They were featured in the 2006 Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival in Melbourne, and toured to the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2009 in the USA.

In addition to performing responsibilities they have recorded extensively for ABC Classic FM.
